Umbria, the Region of 100 towns, is the heart of Italy with the exact geographic center of the country lying near the town of Narni. Thanks to an efficient road network, Umbria can be easily reached from any direction. The region is crossed by the A-1 tollway, the main artery between Rome and Milan. The expressway E45, running between Cesena and Orte, is classified as an international route between North and South Italy.
For those interested in independent travel whether by car, on bike or a foot, it is highly recommended that an accurate and detailed map of the Region be obtained.
Many local bookstores carry the excellent 1:50,000 maps put out by the Kompass series. (email: kompass@kompass.at, website: http:// www.kompass.at) For hiking and biking, the 1:25,000 map is recommended but they can be difficult to obtain.

Arriving by air

Milan: The principal international airport in Italy is Malpensa in Milan. It is small and easily navigated with frequent train connections to most destinations.
Rome: Fiumicino is the international airport in Rome but it is good to know that there are two airports. Ciampino Airport is generally used for national travel but can involve international flights as well.
